Galleries

Exploring masculinities, self, language, personal histories, through layered images, some found, most made by me. I've been working on this series for over eleven years, and appreciate the time(s) represented and created by levels of image/meaning.
I appreciate how the viewer might struggle to see, to understand; that's how I feel!

Words and

Quilts

My mother, Violet Newby, began teaching me to sew/quilt as early as 2000, though I didn't take it in as my own until around 2007. Since then, I've grown in my knowledge of quilting histories (predominantly a female-created art with traditions about technique, design, and purpose) and how I relate to/in them. My work tends to focus on self: defining, depicting, laughing at, but also looks at broader (or more specific?) issues of design and art histories (Minimalism, Pop Art, representationalisms, Abstract Expressionisms). Now, I view quilting as collage-making, juxtapositions through fabric choice, design, cultural significances, symbolism, allusions, etc.
I've been interested in painting and drawing ever since Mom bought my older brother David and me a Masterpiece game back in the early 1980s. I remember O'Keeffe, Bosch, Hopper, others, but didn't start drawing or painting consistently until high school in the early 1990s. I've mostly learned on my own, through tons of self-guided research, reading and reading and reading and some practicing. I'm attracted to color, line, texture, contrasts, representations of masculinities, and social interactions.

Painting/Drawing

Dance Halls

In early 2005, friend and author Gail Folkins asked me if I'd be interested in shooting some photos for her book about dance halls in Texas. I said, "Of course, I know nothing about dance halls!" Over a period of a little more than a year and a half, we ventured across Texas to more than fifteen halls or music venues: she wrote, I photographed. Texas Tech UP published the book, Texas Dance Halls: a Two-Step Circuit, in Fall 2007. The images below represent  a combination of published and unpublished work from that body.
